    CASA RED SHOE GALA

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, who are trained to represent the best interests of children in juvenile abuse and neglect court cases. CASA is a local, nonprofit organization in communities all across the nation. Since CASA’s national inception, CASA volunteers have helped more than two million children find safe, permanent homes.
CASA of East Tennessee, Inc. was established in 1986 in Knox County when Judge Carey E. Garrett became aware of a growing nationwide CASA movement responding to the needs of Juvenile Court Judges for assistance in abuse and neglect cases. He believed that a CASA organization in Knoxville could assist the juvenile court system in our area through gathering critical information about the lives of the children within the system. Since then, we’ve been working daily to fulfill our mission to improve the lives of abused and neglected children through trained volunteers who advocate for a safe, permanent, loving home. The goal of our intervention is to represent the best interests of each child we serve.

KNOXVILLE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - CHAMBER CLASSICS - BACH CONCERTO FOR TWO VIOLINS

This energetic Chamber Classics performance led by Music Director Aram Demirjian includes the theatrical music of Schnittke, searing music of Golijov, and abnormally assertive Bach’s Concerto for 2 Violins, performed by new Concertmaster William Shaub and principal second violin Edward Pulgar.

This all-string program showcases the full range capabilities of the Chamber Orchestra. While two pieces feature a double-violin solo by Bach, this program also uses a tongue-in-cheek style of string players combating each other with their instruments while playing. The program concludes with Jennifer Higdon’s “String” and Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, the latter of which is an edgier piece than normally heard on the classical stage.

    AKIMA CLUB PRESENTS CABARET

On February 24, 1947, thirteen women founded the Knoxville Junior Women’s Club.  They affiliated themselves with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Tennessee District II and the Knoxville Federation of Women’s Clubs.  These thirteen women were concerned with taking an active interest in the needs of the Knoxville community while still maintaining their friendships.  They truly began the Akima Club’s mission of being a friend to the community by giving of themselves and their resources with respect, dedication and compassion.

The organization updated its by-laws and eliminated age limitations for club members in 1951. They also changed the club’s name to Akima, a Native American term for leader.  Although the Akima Club continued to serve the General Federation of Women’s Clubs during the next three decades, it expressed its desire for autonomy and in 1987 chose not to renew membership with the Federation.

With over 125 Active members and the support of our Sustaining and Extension members, we continue the tradition of volunteer work begun over 70 years ago. In addition to the many service hours performed in the Knoxville community, Akima contributes to the financial needs of various area service organizations with grant monies raised through the Akima bi-annual fundraiser, Cabaret.

    KNOXVILLE OPERA PRESENTS TURANDOT

Desired by all men but wanting none, China’s cold-blooded Princess Turandot has built a wall of riddles around her heart.

Certainly the finest opera never completed, Turandot was bereft of its final scene due to Puccini’s untimely death. While it took a mere mortal to finish what this genius composer had started, Turandot remains among the top of the operatic pantheon to this day. Its ravishing score bursts with brilliant choruses and fiendishly difficult arias, including “Nessun dorma,” which Luciano Pavarotti elevated to iconic status. The opera’s music and majesty will be crowned by four sensational artists.

JONNY LANG WITH TONY LUCCA SOLO

It is hard to believe that at 36 years old Jonny Lang has already had a successful career for two decades.

Easier to believe when you learn he released his first platinum record at 15 -- an age when many young people are just beginning to play music. Lie to Me revealed a talent that transcended the crop of blues prodigies floating around in the late Nineties. No flashy re-hasher of classic blues licks, even at that early age Lang was a full-blown artist with a style of his own. Also, setting Lang apart from the wunderkind crowd was a 15-year-old voice that sounded like a weathered soul shouter. Actual life experience was yet to come, and has been subsequently chronicled in a series of five uniformly excellent recordings. "I got married, had kids, and that arc has been recorded on albums along the way," says Lang. "There is a lot of personal history in there, and also some things that relate to world events."
